In a short story from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willig, a woman discovers it’s never too late to make things right
She's the widow of the Aviator in the Iron Mask-- a British World War I hero whose exploits both on the field and off of it made the papers on two continents. But was their Armistice Day engagement really the romantic fantasy it seemed? A lifetime later, Camilla Frobisher is forced to retrace the steps of her past-- all the way back to November 11, 1918, the day her life changed forever.
The Record Set Right A Short Story from Fall of Poppies Stories of Love and the Great War eBook Lauren Willig
This was so well written that I stopped occasionally and reread paragraphs to just savor the way Willig used few words and managed brilliantly to convey so well the atmosphere of post WWI Europe. The story itself was not great -- it totally stretched plausibilitySpoiler: it felt like cheating to make such a simple misunderstanding the cause for the change the course of Edward and the heroine's life and I just didn't buy it -- that lessened the impact of the tragedy of lost love.) End Spoiler.
But there were some really excellent -- and realistic -- reflections on life and love and how things turn out. I recommend this story just for the brilliant writing.

The Record Set Right A Short Story from Fall of Poppies Stories of Love and the Great War eBook Lauren Willig Reviews
A decent read, but sad that it just ends and a sad story in general with no happy ever after ending.
It's very well written. I was sucked into the story very fast. I would love a full length book of this. I would have preferred a sweeter ending but I can't have everything I want and I still was ok with it. It is a short story after all...
Seriously, I am in awe of how well Lauren Willig is able to evoke the atmosphere of the Great War. The narrative (well, the beginning chapters, at least) were superb, absolutely spot-on. Willig is a master at setting the milieu both in the Kenya parts and the England parts of the book.
The plot was also strong, except in a couple of spots (more on that later). The characters are mostly formed, considering this IS a short story, but Willig did enough so that we get a good grasp of who Millie (Camilla) and Edward (Ned) are as people in the present, and also the past.
Now, here is where I dock stars
SPOILER! REALLY?! They become star-crossed lovers separated by time and ocean because of a misinterpretation of something Edward saw between Millie and Nicholas? To compound that, given what Ned and Millie did just previously to this, neither bothered to speak up about what later transpired - Ned confronting Millie and Nicholas, and Millie demanding to know why Ned would propose to Pansy immediately after their tryst. It's the height of laziness when two characters don't talk to each other, don't seek to get answers to what's going on that makes for underwhelming "conflict".
Oh yes, another thing about this novel that had me in disbelief was that Millie and Nicholas were only ever "partners" and never consummated their decades-long marriage! Uh yeah, sure. And since the two never had a true marriage, I wish LW had inserted a paragraph or two about how Nicholas felt raising another man's child, even if the father of that child was - wait for it - his own brother! Yes, dear readers, the one and only time Millie and Edward became lovers resulted in a love child. END SPOILER
Even given the faults above, I still recommend this story only because the atmosphere of the time period is so well written. It's lush and highly evocative of the Gilded Age - Great War setting. Finally, I'm glad LW brought up the fact that maybe it was better Millie and Edward didn't have a life together because the realities of the mundane needs of living might have had an adverse impact on their relationship. This kind of reasonable thinking is often missing in "lost love" types of stories.
I wish the story had been longer, frankly.
This seemed like a section of a larger work that had hit the editing room floor. It's also too short to have the charm of the longer works.
This was a very nice short but sweet story. This also has great potential to be a full on novel in a dual time line format Ms Willig excels at.
This short story managed to convey the essence of a sweeping epic generational historical novel. The emotional journey, the identification with the central character, and the transfer to another time and place was complete. This was written from a first person viewpoint and it was effortless to read; it was absolutely genuine enough to feel like a non-fiction recounting of a life.
This is part of the upcoming anthology, Fall of Poppies. Had that anthology not already been on my list of books I am highly eager to read, this story would have catapulted it there. This is a short story that I may re-read because it was that good. I wished there would have been more, simply because it was so enjoyable, but it felt complete and perfect as it was.
