Brad Prendergast is into surfing, parties and girls. Work is a necessary evil which he indulges in for short periods to accumulate enough funds to support his leisurely lifestyle. The appearance of a distressed old girlfriend triggers a concerned response. Chloe's new husband, Stefan has mysteriously disappeared while holidaying in Germany.
Brad plays the Good Samaritan and steps up to help. An intricate web of lies and deception greets Brad's attempts to unravel the events leading up to Stefan's disappearance. It appears nobody is telling the truth, all knowledge of Stefan's immediate past appears to have been erased.
Brad has had previous contact with Jefferson Sainsbury, head of CIA operations. Brad's investigations lead him straight back to the CIA, they are obviously implicated. A reluctant Jefferson is forced to recruit Brad to assist in locating Stefan, but he is not about to disclose the true nature of the operation.
A top secret mission has gone horribly wrong; Stefan's loss is explained as collateral damage. Brad Prendergast is also highly likely to have his name added to that list. A new Middle East Islamic terrorist group has emerged; they now have possession of the top secret Firestrike.
Angel is the code name of an aggrieved Islamic woman. She has been recruited by the CIA to infiltrate the enemy. Brad's close ties with Angel see him thrust deeper into a cauldron of espionage and danger. Time is running out, an operational Firestrike in the hands of the enemy will have catastrophic consequences for the free world.

FIRESTRIKE Prendergast Uncompromised edition by Ian Welch Literature Fiction eBooks

Action packed and exciting! It kept me engaged and I coudn't wait to find out what happened next. When things with the FIRESTRIKE mission go wrong, Prendergast is called in to fix things, and it just goes crazy from there. I loved the way it kept things moving and the action was intense. Great writing and very compelling drama, I was not at all let down by Ian Welch and his storytelling skills.

Worth looking into for anyone who is a fan of the James Bond genre of spy-thrillers!

FIRESTRIKE Prendergast Uncompromised edition by Ian Welch Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Brad Prendergast, a California beach bum, lives one wave at a time in constant danger of financial ruin. He slips in and out of the workforce whenever he needs cash to finance his SoCal dream lifestyle. Unfortunately, he's only good at three things shredding tasty waves, romancing hot women and treading the dangerous waters of international espionage. Not exactly the best of career prospects.

When a CIA-sponsored secret mission to sell a high-tech Firestrike system to Islamic terrorists goes awry, an American aerospace engineer (Stefan) is kidnapped and held hostage. Chloe, his spouse, turns to the only one who can help Prendergast.

And oh what a can of worms is opened.

I enjoyed the plot, it had plenty of twists, betrayals and ulterior motives to keep me entertained but remained logical to keep me from feeling cheated. To its credit, this rip roaring story moves fast, with exotic settings reminiscent of a 007 flick. The author's writing style mixes blisteringly funny moments with unexpectedly touching scenes all under the constant and I mean constant danger of various threats to Prendergast, his "allies", and to the world . Something was always about to go south. Hello, tension!

I agree with the other reviews on the quality of the characterization, a real strength of the author. The cast of colorful characters are well developed and I quickly to came to care about their circumstances and conflicts. The villains were surprisingly competent and the women had moxie. Their motivations were clear, consistent and surprisingly complex.

However,

The grudging buddy-bromance developing between Prendergast and CIA agent Jefferson made the novel for me. Whenever these two were on page together I laughed long and hard. Yes, they were at complete loggerheads for most of the book and seem to hate each others guts (or at least they claim to) but I can only assume their relationship will deepen (and strain!) in future works.

Overall, this was a fun read with excellent patriotic themes and plenty of action. I highly recommend it and will be keeping an eye out for more from this author.
Firestrike Prendergast Uncompromised is the second Prendergast novel by Ian Welch. It certainly lives up to the same standards as does the first novel. It grabs your attention from the first and does not let go. The action is steady and the characters are definitely well developed. The descriptions of the various settings are so clear you can actually visualize being there. I loved this book just as much as the first one.
Brad Prendergast is pulled into a CIA operation by his ex- Chloe Bradburn Mossman. Her husband, Stefan, has been missing for over a month and she can’t get any answers from anyone. She and Stefan had been on a paid vacation in Bonn, Germany. He left to meet someone on business for his company, Axis Research and Development Company (ARDCO) and he never returned. There have been no signs of him since. Someone is paying their rent; but the loss of his paycheck is putting her in a financial bind. She is hoping Brad can help her get some answers. Brad sets out to help her get answers and gets pulled into an international mess.
Stefan was a scientist and had been working on a project for Homeland Security and the CIA. It was Firestrike which was a mechanism which interfered with radio signals and if inserted in a plane, could bring the plane down. The CIA intended to insert Firebird, a mechanism which would pick up communication and send it to the CIA facility at Langley, into Firestrike so they could monitor communications from terrorist groups. Stefan was recruited to sell the plans for Firestrike to a terrorist group. When the prototype was sent to them, it would have Firebird in it. However, the best of plans failed and Stefan was kidnapped and forced to build a prototype for the terrorists. Since he did not have, nor knew about Firebird, he could not insert it into the prototype. He would just have to try to sabotage it somehow without the terrorist catching him. All he had to do was wait for the CIA to rescue him.
Brad learns bits and pieces and confronts the CIA Director of Operations, Jefferson Sainsbury about Stefan. Brad learns just enough to make things difficult for Sainsbury. Eventually, Brad is sent to Bonn to contact Stefan and give him Firebird to insert into Firestrike. Before this can be done, Stefan is finished with the prototype and manages to escape from his captors. Stefan, the terrorists, and the prototype are all gone when Brad gets to the rooms where Stefan had been held.
Now it is a race to find Stefan, the prototype, and the terrorists and stop them. Brad, being in Bonn, Germany is now in the middle of everything.
From the moment suicide bombing and terrorism, in general, became a global phenomenon, the fear of a terrorist group developing an innovative, deadly weapon capable of downing airplanes has been rife. They say, though, that there is no smoke without fire but in the paranoid world of espionage, the CIA has a tendency to notice fire where there’s no smoke. And that’s precisely what happens in Firestrike, except that the agency, by sending an American engineer to Germany to bait a terrorist group with the prototype of a deadly weapon, miscalculated, playing into the hands of the terrorists and putting lives in danger. In the end, to extricate itself from a problem it created, it must, even if grudgingly, rely on the uncanny abilities of an improbable hero, Brad Prendergast.

While the story is engaging and the plot conceivable, the book, alas, veers away from reality in its portrayal of a female informant named Angel. It is unlikely that an Islamic woman in Turkey—a CIA mole at that—would, under any circumstance, engage in an unabashed public display of affection with an American ‘tourist.’ But on the whole, Firestrike is an interesting read.
